One sentence summarises Machiavelli philosophy. The ruler “cannot always follow those practices of which men are regarded as good. The ruler is often obliged to act against his promises, against charity, against humanity and against religion.” Mugabe skipped one paragraph in Machiavelli’s Discourses. In the course of human affairs, the goddess fortuna and his servant fate sometimes interfere with the best of plans.
