Outcry over ‘hero’ status

E-mail Print PDF
BULAWAYO — The granting of liberation hero status to a 29-year old ZANU-PF provincial youth executive has sparked controversy and reignited debate on the contentious issue, which is part of the outstanding elements of the power-sharing pact.
Lungisani Ngwenya, the Bulawayo ZANU-PF Provincial youth vice chairperson who was found dead in his Bulawayo house, was recently conferred with liberation hero status despite not having participated in the war of liberation.
His family, however, opted that he be buried at his Bubi rural home.
The granting of the liberation hero status has sparked an outcry especially from ZANU-PF critics.
ZAPU spokesperson, Methu-seli Moyo, said the conferment of a heroes’ status on Ngwenya was a mockery because the deceased was only 29 years-old, which meant that by the time he was born the country was already liberated.
“Even the people who granted him the hero status did not explain to us what Ngwenya did to make him deserving of it. They just told us he was a member of ZANU-PF. In a way, it just goes to show that ZANU-PF members are becoming so extinct, such that when they die they are all declared liberation heroes,” said Moyo.
Political analyst, Dumisani Nkomo, said the process of declaring hero status needed to be redefined and overhauled.
“There is need for a redefinition of the liberation hero. I am not saying the late Ngwenya was not a hero, but I am saying there are other people who are more deserving of the liberation heroes’ status than him. I’m talking about people who actually contributed in the liberation war struggle,” he said.
“First of all, the whole process of heroism needs to be re-examined. It has to reflect the country’s values and pride, not just ZANU-PF’s. A hero does not always have to come from ZANU-PF,  there are heroes from other political parties and most of them do not get liberation hero status.”
Filmmaker-cum political commentator, Cont Mhlanga, said the whole process of declaring heroes needed to be redefined so as to eliminate confusion.
“There is no person who did not carry a gun and fight in the liberation struggle that can rightfully be declared a national hero. In my opinion, a person qualifies to be a liberation war hero if they fought in the war.
“However, this latest development could mean that the criteria has changed. If that is so, then I think we should be told,” said Mhlanga, who is currently producing a film on the liberation struggle of Zimbabwe.
“Zimbabweans should take this seriously. It means the definition of who is a hero is being redefined, and if that is so it should be made clear so that we do not get confused. If the meaning of hero is not redefined in this country then, I’m afraid, we will have half the country being declared liberation war heroes.”
Mhlanga said the only people who did not participate in the bush war but still befitting the recognition are those who have made a difference economically.
“The only war we have had post independence has been an economic war, so I would expect individuals who have made strides in the economic recovery of the country to be declared economic liberation heroes. For example, the first person to own a bank, telecommunications company and so forth.
“What did the late Ngwenya do to economically liberate the country, because I don’t see him being involved in the liberation struggle before 1980,” he said.
But ZANU-PF Bulawayo youth chairperson, Butho Gatsi told The Financial Gazette that the late Ngwenya was declared a liberation hero because of the work he had done for his country. “Lungisani was declared a liberation hero because he was working for his country; he wasn’t a sellout like most young people nowadays,” said Gatsi. “Unfortunately we could not bury him at a heroes acre because his parents requested that we bury him at his rural home.
He did get a gun salute however, and all the other paraphernalia normally availed to heroes,” he added. — Own Correspondent.

@Chaporonga, the Hero status carries lifetime very huge benefits from the government. The survivors will benefit forever as long as this government or party is still there.

Hero status for someone who was born 1983 after independence and someone who never contributed anything outstanding ( like Jairos jiri) to the Zimbabwean public, neither anything tangible to his Zanu Pf party, is merely madness. Whoever initiated that idea will be burried kuMbudzi coz change of GVT party is imminent.

Huh! I like this party folks 'Mxwaaa!'. Surprises and surprises all the time. when you think they have run out of ideas-one just pops up. When you think they have run outa support , some folk just shows up. Who said matabeleand was nolonger a stronghold anym*re? He was a fool. Now its all there for all to see that there are many folks dearly beholden to the people's true and only party. Who would have thought there could be m*re than one youth for the party from all those media stories about how the people's party was wasted by its enemies in this part of the country? Voila now-a deputy youth chairpesron-which means there is yet another youth around who in this case is deputised-the chair. Now at least those two folks are enough a*surance that there are millions of folks around becoz you dont just chair one folk-your deputy you see. Who says a gun salute is an indication that the people's beloved party has run out of supporters and there is corruption in the criteria. The criteria is meritoriuos folks. Have you never head that it is a sign of respect? How many folks have pa*sed on and pa*sed out of various ills that this country have mourned-and have they had the honourable gesture of a gun salute? Think of it -the ndabaningi's, the Chikeremas, Muzorewa, Sibandas, Mafuyanas e.t.c.They did not. They lacked the famed consistence, and that folks is the umbilical code-the essential link. They were not part of the 3rd Chimurenga machine-they did not bash farmer Oak out of Fugi farm to pave way for the dear cdes, they were not seen at the one million man march-and even their signatures were not part of the two million anti-'sanctions buls**t'-buls**t indeed for someone to visit snctions on this great-great great and majestic country. But cde Lingisani was always around, persevering, and resolute fighting to the end. Though no inquest has yet been made, with possibility for application for exhumation of limps , into the exact cause of his death, the party rightly saw it beffiting that he be granted this hero status. It did not come cheap after all. The mighty works of cde Lungi are writen in the a**lles of the party for all to see, cde gatsi had no time to explain since he was still grief stricken from losing a close cde.Now that you know cdes, lets put your worries to rest. Lets stop the fanning of jeolousy-infact lets encourage each other to sacrifice m*re for the party if we all want to wind up like cde Lungisani. As for his qualification as a hero, begrudge not. Havent you heard that a Musasa tree from Tongogara Ave, Hre made its way to the National Heroes Acre. "National" folks not "provincial". Now I know you must be wondering just what this tree could have done m*re than cde Lungisani to make such quantum leaps. All I can say at the moment is that the people's beloved party is 'fair' not 'discriminatory' and 'innovative'. By the graces of the party leadership see now that human lie side by side with fauna at the heros acre. What devine inspiration-for both flora and fauna were given the same spirit of life-and in death, they are one, inseperable therfors indivisible. A hint folks -yes cde Lungisani was a bornfree, but do not be fooled-all communists plan for events 50years to come. You honestly think after this generation of liberation war fighters pa*ses 'out', the people'sparty will vanish? The party is regenerating-developing a new brand of heirs to the liberation legacy. If you think the party is filled up with fools you are mistaken. The party is capable of determining its destiny cdes.

For a while this hero status scenario has become a fuss. UMama Lesabe, ubaba Welshman Mabhena and others are not at any hero/ine site and kids born yesterday are declared heroes! Ndabaningi Sithole, James Chikerema, Gibson Sibanda and many others were not declared heroes??? This just makes the whole exercise a sad chapter in the history of Zimbabwe.

Cont mhlanga needs exorcism.to think only those who held a gun deserves to be heroes would make Jairos Jiri turn in his grave. The likes of veteran journalist Willie Musarurwa would not be at Heroes Acre.To deny the born frees recognition is to say the youth cannot live and fight in defence of the same values Nikita Mangena and Magama Tongogara died for.Vhuka Mhlanga.Kwaedza.Khusile.Your hatred for ZANU.PF colours your thinking and makes your thinking warped
