BULAWAYO - Simba Makoni, leader of Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn (MKD) party, has taken sides with ZANU-PF in calling for early polls, albeit after constitutional reforms that would prevent any form of rigging.
The MKD leader said the inclusive government, in which only three parties - ZANU-PF and the two formations of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) are participants - is not working out for Zimbabweans.ZANU-PF has, since the beginning of the year, been demanding that Zimbabwe goes for the ballot this year with or without a new supreme law.
The election call had failed to find takers in the civil society and among other political formations worried about its impact on the recuperating national economy, particularly when viewed against the escalating political tensions countrywide.
The MDC factions have been insisting on the full implementation of a power-sharing pact that binds the three inclusive partners together, including security sector reforms, before the country could go for elections.
Owing to pressure from home and abroad to hold elections after the enactment of a new constitution, ZANU-PF last week dropped its call for elections this year with President Robert Mugabe intimating that polls would now be held no later than March 2012.
This week Makoni, a former finance minister who dumped ZANU-PF in February 2008 citing lack of democracy before challenging President Mugabe's candidature that same year, weighed in, saying elections are now long overdue.
"Are we ready to go to elections? I will give you the answer in two respects: The country needs elections the soonest because the inclusive government is not working for the people of Zimbabwe. But we must ensure that the next election will not give room for the result to be stolen from the winning candidate. That means we must have a credible, national constitution. We must have effective institutions of electoral management: independent, well-resourced with people of integrity, capacity and competence," Makoni said while responding to questions from journalists after a poorly attended rally held by his party on Sunday.
"We must also ensure that the whole electoral process is sufficiently resourced. You can't go to an election if you can't bring ballot boxes, print ballot papers; move them from Nguboyenja to the centre of the city or from the furthest rural area in Binga to the counting centre," he said.
"All those (factors) need to be put in place before we can ask the people of Zimbabwe to go to an election.
"So my view is that the country needs the election soonest so that we can establish an effective national authority that will work for the people. That election must be conducted under conditions that guarantee freeness and fairness," Ma-koni further explained.
The MKD leader has been relatively quiet after losing in the first round of the presidential race in March 2008.
He, however, denies that he has been quiet since 2008, instead blaming the media, wh-ich he said has been denying him coverage.
"No, no, I ha-ven't been silent. It's just that you haven't been reporting on me," he said.
Rating the performance of the co-alition government as "pathetic," Ma-koni also lamented the delays and squabbles in the constitution-making process envisaged to open a new cha-pter in the country's politics and governance.
"There is a lot of fighting for allo-wances, there is a lot of fighting for positions; there is a lot of fighting for ‘our view must be the one that dominate.' We haven't been presented a product yet of the outreach progra-mme," bemoaned Makoni.
MKD is demanding not only a limit to the presidential term in the new constitution but also 70 years as the cut-off age for the incumbent occupying the highest office in the land.
The party is also calling on the country to revert to the one chamber parliament of not more than 150 representatives elected through proportional representation.
Makoni said Zimbabwe is too poor to have the current bi-cameral legislative body of over 200 people.
The MKD leader said there is need for government and the perpetrators of Gukurahundi, Murambatsvina and the June 2008 presidential election run-off killings, among others, to admit and ack-nowledge what they did to compatriots and then genuinely ask for forgiveness before programmes of national healing could be undertaken.
"But it (national healing) cannot be decreed at a press conference by an announcement, which says ‘we are now healed," he said.
"It can also not be done by an awkward structure called organ (Organ on National Healing, Reconciliation and Reintegration), which makes Press conferences and organises seminars. We have to enable people who did wrong to others to engage directly.
"Our structures of traditional leadership, structures of faith and religion, and our structures of community leadership are the most effective starting points for healing and reconciliation," added Makoni.
With the constitutional referendum and subsequent elections to dismantle the shaky inclusive government expected any time after the conclusion of the constitution-making process, political parties are organising their structures to brace themselves for the battle for the control of Zimbabwe.
It is now not uncommon for weekends to just lapse without any political meeting having been organised in Bulawayo and the Matabeleland region at large.

But we all know who you are Simba my kid brother and I insist that there are problems m*re pressing at home than messing with national issues. You need to go back home and put the house in order before mixing up with issues bigger than you. By the way how many votes did you get the last time the ballot boxes were opened?Did you score anything m*re than two in the presidentials (honestly I did not give you mine coz its still m*rtgaged with the people's party after all those farms I seized in its name). If yu were so bright you would have stayed put in ZANU PF-but what did you do?Start up MKD?. Hasn't the truth come out yet that MKD is the people's party' brain child -a side project just like ZAPU ka Dabengwa.Don't get over-ambitious-you are supposed to split the opposition vote and nothing m*re, nothing less. How can we let you do anything other than your terms of reference?-definitely we can't, our hands are currently tied up with m*re pressing issues and serious threats like this MDC thing and surey you two havent been helpfull at all. Research has it that even people from back east don't quite figure you out inspite of all the vote projections and ill-famed advise from Sekuru Retina Mavhunga (isn't it queer to me now that a lady is called sekuru-shoulda thought about that before trusting such fake n'angas)-and even if they did, rumour has it they consider our clan thieves, tyrants and invaders. You know the story about the Hungwe (Vaungwe ve Moyondizvo from masvingo) people who occupied the district that is now called Makoni today-and how our forefathers came from Swaziland and put the entire Ungwe dynasty under the spear? I hope you also recall that we stole the chieftainship from chief Chiduku in a UDI era transaction at the DA's office where our cousin working in the DA's office registered the whole district as Makoni instead of Chiduku? These people know it all-and like I said surely we are a bunch of a*segai-totting thugs and district -grabbing thieves. Come to think of it my young brother-how much different are we then from the Khumalo tribe in the west? Shameless, we all are indeed. See what they did -they took Matobo district from the Khoi-San, Mat North from the shona-speaking Nambia,Kalanga and BaTonga. And we, we took Maungwe district from the Ungwe people. Are we therefore not an a*segai-totting, district -grabbing two of a kind? Now see the predicament that both you and Dabengwa are in when we think dividents must start flowing in from the exploits of our forefathers- The votes aint coming in and you want their democraric votes now that there is no m*re a*segai-totting barbaric force s**ce around.

The Leader we all are crying for the one who will never rule,I cry oh beloved Zimbabwe with eyes but we can not see.Makoni's sin is he left Zanu pf quiet late and he is not so popular like Tsvangirai.Given the right to VOTE for all of us will put Xs on this Man.With the corrupt regime for ages but not corrupt,Unlike the most popular tsvangirai who is building a 1million house albeit from corruption (bribes__wikileaks).The media has not done the right job (probably they are bribed too)giving us the balanced news and critism of all aspiring PRESIDENTS, not biased .

In terms of articulating issues, this dude is far superior than any princ**al in the coalition government. I think because of problems well known to anyone, we were robbed of better brains to lead this country.
Was he going to be another Mugabe? I don't know. Can we trust very clever people given what Mugabe ended up doing? I think if Makoni is genuinely interested in changing the fortunes of this country, he should immediately merge with MDC-T and forge a formidable force, going forward. The priority at the moment is change and thus the basis of my argument. In New Zimbabwe, he can continue with his MKD project to counter the main. If he is comfortable with MDC then he can remain there.
I'm ecstatic when a political leader mention Community Leadership- I have been vocal about this thing for some time now and wondered if our future leaders have even considered it. Africa shall be different if community leadership framework is properly implemented, because the pillars are already there.

Politicians have a tendency to move with the wind; testing, dodging, lying, misrepresenting and manufacturing information to suit circ*mstances that will best safeguard their warped interests. Makoni is fighting hard for relevance. The guy has to justify his political existence. He did not break away from ZANU PF to address the interests of the ma*ses, but had express orders to establish an alternative to ZANU PF that would oversee the protection from the law or otherwise of plundered wealth of his handlers. This grouping had predicted the downfall of ZANU PF and did not want to be caught on the wrong side of history. We are talking guys who are living extremely luxurious lifestyles. They will not relinquish that without a bitter fight. This is Makoni's grouping.

yes lets reduce the parly to 150 though there wont be even one from your MKD. let also reduce the age of presidential candidates though it wont you or welsh. elections are overdue but we wont rush them with the violence in the countryside and with no constitution. also, we need the results of mujuru's murder before we can vote coz we might have elected politicians moered in the same way. so basically nyathi hamuna nyaya! go back to zanu with dabengwa and we will collectively trounce you in 2013 not now as you think!

Do not be fools you folks, that vote is not for you at all. I heard that this tea-boy c*m miner of a m*rgan is f***ing with long nets with small holes-just to make sure he misses nothing;crab or frog, fish or crocodile -if in doubt check the last ballot and next ballot results? Especially you Simba-at least I Dydimus Diesel Mutasa have my own moments of foolishness like that Chinhoyi diesel folkstory that I mistook for a miracle when NOCZIM was all -pumps-dry (now I am stuck with a foolish nickname "Diesel")- am covered coz I stuck to the people's party rather than start some daydreaming -self edifying, misculculated grand-standing fly -by-night political MKD of a joke? You tell me, who will vote for you-you know the Makoni people are fake in the eastern province and the rumour mill has it that the Chiduku chieftainship people are beggining to re-a*sert themselves courtessy of this Chief Charumbira who happens to be kith and kin and m*re powerfull in the council of chief's circles. Last time I heard, the current Chief Makoni was stood down from attending the chief's council and replaced by Chief Chiduku of all people. He is even moving a motion to relagate us to mere headman and pay tribute to him. Do you get the sense here? He is claiming back the whole district that used to be the icon of fame for the Nyati people. Surely deals thought done under the a*segai are coming around these days to haunt us like nightmares. Without shame, what the a*segai did is being changed by a mere ball point pen-I call that moving! What shall we do my brother? I honestly think there are problems to do with chieftaincy m*re pressing at home that need your type of yet to be confirmed overpublicised intellect. You are better off dealing with village headmanship at home than national issues. Why don't you approach Dabengwa and compare notes? Your projects don't seem to be achieving the projected results and you have disappointed the party. I a*sure you the last time the politburo set, you were top on the agenda and there were proposals that both projects need to be de-commissioned without further ado-you are serious liabilities to the people's party. However. like I said , it was agreed that you two be considered for village headman posts so that you start from gra*sroots in line with party policy. That means you will have to go up through the chief's council to make it back to the politburo. My young brother, of that I cant guarantee, you know there hasn't been much wortk to align chieftainship with party structures as far as promotion is considered. I a told to become a chief, you dont really have to be a green card carrying member, you just have to come from the right clan and possess matching DNA. Thats all.So think about it seriously-with the fake Makoni chieftaincy under rightfull contest from Chiduku, what will really become of you?
