Editor - The Question and Answer article with Finance Minister Tendai Biti made interesting reading.
I was taken aback by the headline Under fire Biti speaks. I am not sure if he is under fire. I have a question for him though.
Farming is a business. Why should farmers be crying out for handouts?
But Biti must be more respectful to others. Saying, "I won't dignify that with an answer" is being disrespectful. He must change his attitude but otherwise his performance is not that bad.

If farming is a business, then no one other than the entreprenuer himself has obligations to provide capital or buy the products. The market laws of demand and supply should apply. Specialisation again takes over. That should take care of greedy cohots who seized 47 farms without a single cent to resource them. the means of production should be in the hands of those capable of producing something, not self-enriching thugs and mugs. Why expect Biti to fund your farms? Did you consult him as to how many farms you should indeed have taken in the first place? Even Ian Smith was carefull to just give loans, or guarantee farmers applying for loans from banks-he never put the Rhodesian government under any obligation of any sort regarding capitalisation of farms and purchasing their output. For that reason Rhodesia was m*re successifull agriculturally over the whole of Africa. Coomon sense is what people need, and Ian Smith, minus his apatheid mantra, had some . Gono gave the farmers diesel-the result? Makeshift , bush fuel stations mushroomed in the forests along highways, not a single grain was harvested. Surely no-one wants a repeat of the same silliness in a government full of grown ups. Although I dont have any reasons for a personal liking or relationship with Biti, I agree with him 100%-he needs not respect any fools regarding national issues requiring common sense. We should calmly confront all possibilities folks. "I wont dignify that with an answer" is the proper dicta for these circ*mstances.

Farming is a business but it is the govt's duty to create an environment where resources and inputs are available. My brother who has a farm asked me for a $3000 to pay for ploughing his fields seed and fertilizers. The govt could not procure any of these necessities. No tractors and diesel were available. seed and fertilizers were not imported and Biti was refusing to pay for hese even when South Africa ws willing to sell them to us. How ever Biti threatened to sell farms if farm taxes were not uptodate.Zimbabwean farmers are generally hard working and do not want handouts, but they do not want to be used as p**ns by Biti trying to prove that Land refom was a mistake.
