Civil servants getting raw deal

E-mail Print PDF

Editor - For the first time in the history of this country, January 2012 is the month civil servants have gone without a salary increment.

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority is claiming to have surpassed its target for the previous year. Civil servants are getting far below the poverty datum line.
To add insult to injury, apart from the incentives demanded by teachers, the government has approved over 60 percent increments for school fees. Rentals have gone up by 65 percent.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority increased its tariffs by 31 percent yet nothing has been done to improve salaries of public workers whose living standards have gone down.
The days when employment brought enjoyment are over. The powers-that-be should look into their plight as this has a negative effect on the future generations.
We are creating an environment conducive to corruption, that is, corrupt judges, police officers, teachers, nurses to name just a few public workers.
Lovemore Andrew Magaso,
Zengeza

And believe me Andrew, once a culture of corruption sets in it is nearly impossible to route it out. Who do we blame for this? Our leaders of cause, I do not blame those that are trying to survive in an environment where the fat govt leaders spend scarce resources buying themselves the latest luxury cars from Germany while the workers starve. The problem with our leaders is they want to have the status symbols that Zimbabweans in Diaspora are bringing home. I live and work abroad, and as a professional my $93,000.00 salary is even way above the average wage in most Western countries. I do not see why cash strapped Zimbabwe should spend a fortune paying for the same automobiles and gadgets for those in power, simply because those in the Diaspora can afford them. I stopped at Sam Levys for an Ice cream late last year and witnessed a spectacle, so many new cars and models that only people with a lot of foreign currency can afford. Unfortunately our leaders believe they have to be seen to be in this cla*s.In the US of A its the top bra*s that drive the crapiest cars. They have Ford Crown Vics Tauruses and Cavaliers for those in govt, these are the cheapest cars money can buy. How about mixed priorities for our leaders in Zimbabwe
