Editor — The University of Zimbabwe has recently been vilified by the press for being a “police state” simply because some unscrupulous characters had been interviewed by the press giving that negative impression.
The university experienced 180 cases of unregistered students from elsewhere including local universities and colleges, attending lectures, thereby enjoying free tuition and free services from the University of Zimbabwe.
A few days ago two medical Zimbabwean students (names and statements of admission of guilt supplied) on vacation from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and from a university in Istanbul respectively, were nabbed by members of the university security while helping themselves to free lectures at the College of Health Sciences.
During examinations, unregistered students attempted to sit for examinations, with a good number of them still under suspension for cheating during examinations. Therefore the security apparatus at the university cannot let standards sink and the reputation of the institution tarnished by a few misguided individuals.
It is accepted standard procedure at universities all over the world to check on malpractices such as the cited instances.
The University of Zimbabwe would therefore be failing in its core duty of ensuring that bona fide students are not disadvantaged by the unscrupulous actions of the few.
Academic discipline is the hallmark of quality education.
