UZ will never be a ‘police state’

Editor — The University of Zimbabwe has recently been vilified by the press for being a “police state” simply because some unscrupulous characters had been interviewed by the press giving that negative impression.

The university experienced 180 cases of unregistered students from elsewhere including local universities and colleges, attending lectures, thereby enjoying free tuition and free services from the University of Zimbabwe.
A few days ago two medical Zimbabwean students (names and statements of admission of guilt supplied) on vacation from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and from a university in Istanbul respectively, were nabbed by members of the university security while helping themselves to free lectures at the College of Health Sciences.
During examinations, unregistered students attempted to sit for examinations, with a good number of them still under suspension for cheating during examinations. Therefore the security apparatus at the university cannot let standards sink and the reputation of the institution tarnished by a few misguided individuals.
It is accepted standard procedure at universities all over the world to check on malpractices such as the cited instances.
The University of Zimbabwe would therefore be failing in its core duty of ensuring that bona fide students are not disadvantaged by the unscrupulous actions of the few.
Academic discipline is the hallmark of quality education.

The comments above all reveal pointers that as a country we are still in the lead in education and our standards are attractive. We, zimbabweans have continuously enjoyed our share in the academic arena, and we boast of good education. Therefore we have to try all we can to preserve this great treasure and to ensure that any efforts to discredit our educational institutions and to undermine are standards are vehemently repulsed. Our education has been the emblem of our citizens and we are well known for this, we do call upon the authorities at UZ to instist protecting its integrity and uplifting its role in the global knowledge.

it is the magnitude of the invasion by non bona fide students wanting to attend lectures at the UZ that is a little worrying. How does it happen that such large numbers gather in one place for the same reason? There is something else we are not being told here. Perhaps the authorites at the UZ need to explain further.

It is the duty of the University of Zimbabwe authorities to protect the high integrity that the institution is known for. As a former graduate of this institution, I do not think it is fair to brand UZ as a police state. In any case, the people who think so are entitled to their opinion, however, they need to be reminded of what a police state is. When cheaters are caught, we say, well done the security for you are doing your job. The University of Zimbabwe is a market place for great ideas, technological innovation and grooming ground for future experts and corporate leaders for the government and the private sectors and not cheaters. When one is coming from an outside University, he or she must have a letter from his or her institution and engage the UZ authorities for permission to carry out research. Without politicizing and unfairly undermine the UZ, let us know that cheating is a criminal offense especially in the academia.
