HARARE city fathers are studying proposals to reform the chaotic urban transport system in what might see the re-introduction of a single urban transporter in addition to increasing the number of one way streets.
Latest council minutes also reveal that council is not relenting on its bid to lobby Parliament to amend the Urban Councils Act, which gives too much power to the Local Government Minister.
With regards to the reforms in the urban transport system, council has already received proposals from Ashok Leyland (India) to improve and manage public transportation in the capital. The city fathers have since tasked the Town Clerk to pursue the matter and report back to relevant council committees.
In order to come up with a sustainable and cost-effective public transportation system, council will also rope in the Ministry of Local Government and the Transport Ministry.
“His worship, the mayor (Muchadeyi Masunda) reported that he had received a proposal from Ashok Leyland Company of India on improvement and management of the urban transport in the city”, reads part of the council minutes.
“He alluded to the serious problems currently being faced by commuters regarding urban public transportation and referred to the previous system where the city provided the termini, while the government guaranteed subsidies on public transportation and a private sector company supplied the busses. He felt that this arrangement had to be resuscitated”.

How on earth can an Indian company tell us about improving traffic when we have all seen how chaotic the situation in India is? The current crop of city officials are daft and cannot plan for the future of the city.
London has m*re people than the entire population of Zim and yet people still get to work everyday. There are problems but the issue is they always do something about it.
