BECAUSE of the celebration of cowboy culture, violence is embedded in American culture as is apple pie. Nevertheless, the fear that their dear little children may not be safe at school or in church, the two places that are supposed to be sacrosanct, demands an explanation. Quick solutions do not seem to have addressed the fundamentals, because school massacres have escalated. The fundamentals can be traced to Benjamin Spock, MD, whose manual for raising children has dominated American thinking since 1954.
